I cannot recommend the new version enough. It allows the show to breathe and grow. It doesn't really add much, but it does develop more of what's already there.
I think of Yamato as Japan's Star Trek, not just for the influence they had on their respective nations' sci-fi stories but also in how they embodied how each country felt about themselves during the Cold War era. The Yamato rose from the dust of ruin to sail among the stars just as Japan rehabilitated her bombed-out war industry. The Enterprise was a vessel of exploration. at the the forefront of man's knowledge and led the way in a cold war against the Klingons.

I totally grew up on these watching them in elementary school when I was a kid in the 70s! I really dug space battleship Yamato!
